Midweek Update

August 17, 2022

A Message from Jeff...

                                     What is “the Streisand effect?”

The Streisand effect is for the phenomenon in which attempts to hide, censor, or prevent access to something have the opposite result—the unintended consequence of drawing far more attention to that thing.  For example, someone posts an embarrassing photo of a celebrity online.  Around 100 people see it.  The celebrity takes legal action to enforce its removal.  Upon learning of the legal action, the media covers the story.  As a result, millions of people seek out and view the photo.

Named for singer, Barbra Streisand, who in 2003 sued photographer Kenneth Adelman for posting a photo of her home on his website as part of a collection of coastal erosion photos for scientific and research use.  Prior to Streisand’s lawsuit, fewer than 10 people (a total that included Streisand’s own lawyers) had viewed the photo.  As a result of the media attention around the lawsuit, millions of people eventually visited the website to view the photo.

For some reason, in our human DNA there is this prevalent tendency to rebel, to do what is restricted, to taste “forbidden fruit.”  It dates all the way back to the Garden of Eden and Satan’s appeal to our first parents, Adam and Eve, in Genesis 3…

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”      Genesis 3:1-5

Don’t listen to the deceiver.  When we defy God’s will or His way, we will pay a great price for our rebellion.  As I often say, “Life always works better God’s way.”

We are exploring the miracles that the apostle John records in his gospel - there are 7.  During August we are studying 3 of the Miracles.  You are invited to read through the gospel of John during this month.  We’re not looking at them merely to learn about what Jesus did then--we are looking because they remind us of what Jesus is able to do in our lives today

I hope to see you, with a guest this Sunday at Batesville Christian Church, at either 9:00 or 10:30 a.m.
